The Story of Webdigs

In 2003, Courtney and her new husband, Craig, were ready to purchase their first home. They knew there was a commission to be earned if they handled the transaction themselves, but at the same time, they wanted an experienced broker to help them through the process of negotiation, the paperwork, the mortgage and the closing. Since they were family, Rob Buntz, a licensed broker, agreed to help them if they would do all the touring themselves until they found the home they wanted. So, they began their search on the Internet and started driving around to open houses and showings, explaining to the agents at each house that they were represented by a broker. They soon found their home. Rob drew up the paperwork, negotiated the deal and arranged the closing. After a few hours of work, he received his buyer's broker commission and was able to give them back about $8,000. An idea was born.

 

Three years later, in the summer of 2006, Courtney's brother, Jesse Olson, his softball buddy Tom Meckey and Rob Buntz, all licensed real estate professionals, began talking about the state of the real estate industry and about how real estate brokerages needed to change and evolve to better reflect the demands and expectations of consumers. The Internet had become a significant tool in the lives of most people, and technology was now available to streamline the real estate transaction.

Just like trading stocks online or making travel reservations on an airline website, Rob, Jesse and Tom believed many consumers preferred to be in control and to do business on their own time. Many home buyers now preferred to drive themselves around to tour properties, meeting agents at the door instead of spending hours with them in the car. In 2006, 90% of people looking for a home began their search on the Internet. Many times, buyers had chosen their new home before even speaking with a real estate agent.

Rob, Jesse and Tom talked about how they could harness the potential time savings of technology and the power of the Internet to provide a great real estate transaction experience at a fraction of the full commission cost. Clearly, they would need to build a consumer-friendly, intuitive site that would be fun and easy to use. They would also need to build technology into the site to streamline the business and save everyone time and money. With a powerful search engine and an intuitive, simple site, they would be able to pass along the savings to their sellers and reward their buyers for doing the leg work themselves, much like Courtney and Craig’s experience with Rob.

So, that is how Webdigs was born.
